InvisiBubble: an innovative bubble barrier to protect the Canal de l’Ourcq from floating waste
A first in France in watercourse protection
In the last few months, an innovative piece of technology has appeared in the Canal de l’Ourcq in Paris: InvisiBubble, a waste-blocking barrier that works using air bubbles
Installed by The Searial Cleaners, the Wearth Group subsidiary specializing in collecting and managing waste in our seas and rivers, the unique system represents a major step forward in protecting aquatic ecosystems in urban areas.
An innovative way of trapping waste without harming biodiversity
InvisiBubble works using a simple but highly effective concept: a perforated tube on the bottom of the canal creates a permanent curtain of air bubbles. As they rise to the surface, they form an invisible barrier that redirects floating waste to a collector installed above the water, efficiently trapping plastic, bottles, packaging and other floating waste before it reaches larger watercourses or the ocean.
The benefit of this system lies in its ability to intercept waste while allowing boats as well as fish and other aquatic creatures to pass through, leaving the local ecosystem undisturbed. InvisiBubble is also chemical-free and has a very low environmental impact.

Paris the pioneer: committed to tackling waste

The City of Paris is France’s first local government to have adopted the technology, reaffirming its ambition to reduce plastic pollution within its jurisdiction.
The system is installed in the Canal de l’Ourcq, at the heart of Paris’s 19th arrondissement, forming part of a wider set of ecological initiatives designed to protect biodiversity and improve Parisians’ quality of life.
The initial results are highly encouraging—in just a few months, several hundred kilos of trash have already been collected, preventing them from further contaminating the aquatic environment.
Plus, the system’s impact extends far beyond its purely technical aspect, as it also raises awareness among local people of the importance of protecting their immediate environment.
Proven and adaptable technology for cleaning up marine environments
InvisiBubble has already proven its effectiveness elsewhere in the world. The system installed in Paris is fully modular and can be tailored to the specific requirements of each site—in river, marine, or lake environments.
Its ease of installation and maintenance coupled with its low running costs make InvisiBubble a particularly appealing solution for local authorities focused on improving the quality of their watercourses.
A crucial challenge: tackling plastic pollution in water
Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans, with serious consequences for marine biodiversity. A large proportion of this waste comes from rivers and canals located upstream. By intercepting trash before it reaches the sea, InvisiBubble directly helps to reduce pollution from waste.
As a result, this initiative from The Searial Cleaners directly tackles global environmental challenges and is fully aligned with Wearth Group’s pledge as a purpose-driven company: enabling people to live in harmony within their ecosystems.
An approach to follow to help protect aquatic spaces
Following the success of the Paris system, multiple other local authorities in France are now planning to install InvisiBubble systems in their own areas.

InvisiBubble technology is part of a broader offering from The Searial Cleaners and Wearth Group. As leading stakeholders in protecting aquatic spaces and those on land, they implement solutions that combine innovation and support, simultaneously collecting waste and informing and educating residents to help them change their behavior for good.
