Wearth Group | How Nautiscaphe and Rotax Marine are helping monitor marine biodiversity in Italy

Observing to improve protection

Protecting marine ecosystems begins with a better understanding of how they function.

This is ETT’s goal as part of a program led by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, under the scientific direction of ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale).

Its goal is to digitize and standardize biodiversity monitoring within Italy's 11 marine protected areas (Aree Marine Protette) to improve how environmental data is collected, integrated and used.

By providing reserve managers with reliable and consistent information, the program aims to help refine conservation strategies, improve monitoring of marine environments, and deepen our understanding of the effects of climate change on these ecosystems.

A project supported by our companies Nautiscaphe & Rotax Marine

A solution that combines the expertise of Nautiscaphe and Rotax Marine

To meet the program’s goals, an environmental monitoring solution was developed to collect, centralize, and analyze scientific data from marine protected areas. It’s based on a combination of several complementary technologies, brought together by ETT, a subsidiary of Dedagroup, one of the project’s partners.

Two Wearth Group companies are contributing their technological expertise:

  • Nautiscaphe, with its eco-friendly Ellipse screw-type anchoring system, designed to keep equipment in place while minimizing the impact on sensitive marine habitats;

  • Rotax Marine, with its buoys, on which the measuring instruments deployed at sea are mounted.

The scientific sensors are integrated into this infrastructure to ensure continuous monitoring of environmental conditions.

Measuring marine ecosystems’ health in real time

The equipment installed allows continuous monitoring of several key environmental parameters to take place. These include:

  • temperature;
  • salinity;
  • dissolved oxygen;
  • conductivity;
  • chlorophyll a;
  • phycoerythrin.

On the surface, other instruments measure the swell as well as wind speed and direction. A current meter completes the system by analyzing ocean currents.

Taken together, this data provides a comprehensive picture of environmental conditions, both on the surface and underwater.

Data to support environmental research and management

The information collected directly supports the work of managers of marine protected areas.

In particular, it allows them to coordinate conservation efforts and facilitate the monitoring, planning, and evaluation of environmental measures. It is also used to track changes in physical, chemical, and biological parameters over time to better understand the impacts of climate change on marine environments.

In addition, by standardizing monitoring methods across all sites, it helps build a more coherent picture of the state of the Mediterranean marine environment.

Expertise supporting Wearth Group’s mission

Through ETT, Nautiscaphe and Rotax Marine are demonstrating how industrial expertise can contribute to environmentally beneficial projects.

By providing infrastructure that allows scientific instruments to be deployed under conditions suited to the marine environment, both companies are participating in an initiative aimed at improving our understanding of ecosystems, supporting their management, and, ultimately, strengthening their conservation.

This approach is fully in line with Wearth Group’s mission: to design, manufacture, and distribute solutions that enable people to live in harmony within their ecosystems.
